After a somewhat wild 24-hour span, college football followers now have some clarity regarding clinching scenarios for the Big 12 title game.
While Texas kept itself in a good spot with a 26-16 win over Iowa State on Saturday, the Longhorns still haven’t clinched a berth in the conference championship matchup. The Big 12 released an updated round of clinching scenarios Sunday evening, highlighting how Texas, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State or Kansas State could find themselves at AT&T Stadium.
Here’s a look at the updates as the regular season winds down:
— Oklahoma is still in the race with a win or loss against TCU.
— Texas is in and finishes atop the conference standings with a win against Texas Tech.
How a Texas win affects Saturday scenarios
— With a win over BYU, Oklahoma State can finish second in the Big 12 and set up a showdown with the Longhorns.
— Oklahoma can get in with a win over TCU, a Texas win over Texas Tech and an Oklahoma State loss. The combination of these events would leave Oklahoma at No. 2 in the Big 12, setting up another battle with rival Texas.
— Kansas State can get in with a win over Iowa State, a Texas win over Texas Tech, and losses from Oklahoma and Oklahoma State. This would give the Wildcats a shot to repeat as Big 12 champions after defeating TCU in the 2022 title game.
How a Texas Tech win affects Saturday scenarios
— Texas could still get in but would need a loss from two of the conference’s three two-loss teams (Oklahoma, Oklahoma State or Kansas State). This would pit the Longhorns against the remaining winning team of the aforementioned bunch in Arlington.
— If Texas loses, a win from two or three of the two-loss teams would create a tie between three or four programs at the top of the standings. In this instance, the conference would break the tie using one of various scenarios.
In short, the Big 12 could provide an entertaining weekend highlighted by scoreboard watching. According to the conference, updated scenarios will be released after Friday’s TCU-Oklahoma and Texas Tech-Texas games.
