Fashion lover shares how to style a mini-skirt if you’re in your mid-20s

Must read

Mini-skirts are a wardrobe staple for every fashionable woman – but their ‘school-girl’ reputation is hard to escape.

Kim K. Johnson, from Washington, made it her mission to show women in their mid-20s how to properly style mini skirts.

The influencer aimed to strike the perfect balance between dressing ‘like you’re [at university]’ and dressing ‘too conservatively’.

She successfully styled several outfits around mini skirts, including ones perfect for a night out, Sunday brunch, and going to a concert.

The trick is to balance out the ‘proportions’ of your outfit, so that outside focus is drawn to one key aspect.

A pleated mini skirt

Pleated mini skirts fall into ‘school girl chic’ too easily because of their association with high school uniforms.

Women in their late-teens and early-20s usually pair the wardrobe staple with crop tops that show off their mid-riff – but these outfits look unbalanced and juvenile.

‘I feel like a pleated skirt can easily go into a school girl costume – especially when you’re showing a lot of skin and the skirt is very short,’ Kim said in a video.

She usually aims to balance the skirt out by adding knee-high boots, sheer tights, and a slightly oversized sweater that was long enough to show the skirt’s pleats.

Another woman in the comments revealed exactly why the outfit worked so well.

‘This is the perfect example of the ‘flaunt one thing’ rule as well: midriff and legs was too much, but thighs only with the sheer tights is chic.’

Mini skirts can be styled to fit any occasion, including a wholesome brunch.

Kim was delighted when she received a brunch invitation from one of her friends, and decided to wear a short skirt with a slit on one side.

‘This is a very daytime outfit, and I love pairing a mini skirt with a super oversized sweater.’

The woman paired her black skirt with white socks, loafers, and a grey cardigan that fell right above the slit on her thigh.

‘I like the contrast between something super sexy and feminine and something more cozy,’ she said.

‘I also like the contrast when it comes to loafers – adding a little bit of a masculine touch to the outfit.’

Kim revealed that she wears her black loafers all the time because they’re the ‘perfect alternative’ to white tennis shoes.

‘I pretty much treat loafers like sneakers now and I think they’re super comfortable, but they give you an alternative to just wearing your white sneakers.’

A general rule of thumb is that pairing some ankle or calf boots with a mini skirt will cut your legs off and make them look shorter.

It’s recommended to either wear loafers or knee-high boots to elongate your legs.

Kim paired a leather mini skirt with an oversized jacket that ended right at the edge of her skirt line.

‘I love leather on leather.’

Thousands were thankful for Kim’s videos, with many revealing they weren’t sure how they should be dressing in their mid-20s.

‘As a 26-year-old, THANK YOU!’ one woman said. ‘My style hasn’t changed since I was 16.’

‘You’re out here doing God’s work – thank you!’

‘I have so many mini skirts but can never style them without looking like a teenager, and I’m almost 30.’

‘Lovely style inspiration for classy women.’
