IRON MOUNTAIN, Mich. (WLUC) – Wednesday morning, Sanford Health and Marshfield Clinic Health System announced a memorandum of understanding to combine the companies.

The announcement comes after Marshfield and Essentia Health announced they would not continue with a merger earlier this year.

In a statement, Interim CEO of Marshfield Clinic Health System Brian Hoerneman said, in part:

“Partnering with Sanford Health presents an incredible opportunity for our organizations to unify and establish the premier rural health system in the nation. Together, we will ensure sustainable access to exceptional care for our communities for years to come.”

Marshfield completed a purchase of Dickinson County Healthcare in 2022. The Wisconsin-based healthcare provider also bought the Marquette Internal Medicine and Pediatric Associates Center in 2023.

In a statement, President and CEO of Sanford Health Bill Gassen said, in part:

“We are who we are today because of combinations with care delivery organizations in rural communities across America’s heartland. These opportunities have allowed us to follow through on our promise to deliver world-class health care to every patient we serve no matter their ZIP code, and we are eager to continue building on this track record with Marshfield Clinic Health System.”

Sanford Health is headquartered in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

The companies said there are no immediate changes for employees or those each system serves.

The memorandum of understanding is non-binding.
