AHMEDABAD: A 42-year-old woman from Kathlal in Kheda on Sunday filed a complaint with police alleging that an online betting platform cheated her out of Rs 1 lakh after her 14-year-old son played a prediction game on her mobile. Saroj Jain, a resident of Shukan Society, in her FIR said that her son Sumit told her on Feb 16 that he was playing an online game on a platform called Probo.
Sumit told Saroj that he had answered a few questions on the app and won a Rs 40 reward, which was deposited in Saroj’s account. On the night of Feb 26, Sumit again answered some questions on the app and got a reward of Rs 40.
On the morning of Feb 27, Saroj received an OTP on her phone which Sumit shared with an unknown caller. After a while, when she checked her phone, she found Rs 1 lakh was withdrawn from the bank account linked to her phone.
She said she realized that she had been cheated and approached police. Kathlal police registered a complaint of cheating under the Indian Penal Code along with charges under the Information Technology Act. On May 21, 2023, Haryana’s excise and taxation department has issued a notice for Rs 1,500 crore to the Gurugram-based online betting firm M/s Probo Media Technologies Private Limited.
The notice accused the company of misclassifying its services. It said GST is applicable 100% on the face value of bet and the tax rate on chance winnings from betting or gambling is 28%. However, this firm was paying only 18% and had evaded Rs 1,500 crore in tax. In July 2022, Mumbai police filed an FIR against Probo after it was revealed that the app was offering gambling betting in the name of prediction gaming.
