Ryan Gosling suits up in Barbie pink at 96th Academy Awards Nominees luncheon in Beverly Hills… after Ken actor defended Margot Robbie against Best Actress snub

Ryan Gosling signaled his ongoing support for his blockbuster comedy Barbie when he rocked a pink suit at the 96th Oscars Nominees Luncheon in Beverly Hills on Monday.

The 43-year-old three-time Academy Award nominee — who earned his most recent nomination in the Best Supporting Actor category for playing Ken in Barbie — looked chic in the monochrome ensemble as he arrived on the red carpet.

His appearance at the luncheon, where his costar Margot Robbie was also in attendance, comes after he defended her when she was left out of the Best Actress nominations for this year’s Oscars.

Gosling also spoke up in support of the film’s director and co-writer, Greta Gerwig, after she was not selected among the five Best Director nominees.

The actor put on a stylish display with his well-tailored suit, which he wore with a shirt of the same shade.

He skipped the tie and left a few buttons at the top undone, and he contrasted the bright look with classic black shoes.

The La La Land actor sported a thick beard that was strikingly different from his clean-shaven, bleached-blond Ken look, and he wore his slightly shaggy hair in a stylishly messy style.

Although he was joined by his costar Margot and director Greta, Ryan also took some time to catch up with legendary filmmaker Steven Spielberg, who was an executive producer on Gosling’s 2018 Neil Armstrong biopic First Man.

That film — a critical success that nonetheless underperformed at the box office — earned Gosling his second Oscar nomination for Best Actor.

The frontrunner at this years Academy Awards is Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer, which earned 13 nominations.

The Yorgos Lanthimos–directed science fiction–fantasy film Poor Things is close behind with 11, while Martin Scorsese’s Western true-crime epic Killers Of The Flower Moon received 10 and Barbie scored eight nominations.

Barbie fans have described Margot and Greta’s lack of nominations as ‘snubs,’ though the other actresses and directors have all received similar critical acclaim, and some critics opined that Gosling’s role was funnier and more dynamic than her title role as Barbie.

The framing was also somewhat misleading, as both women are still nominated for Oscars for Barbie. Robbie is a producer on the film, meaning she would be a winner if Barbie won Best Picture, while Gerwig is nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay with her husband, fellow filmmaker Noah Baumbach, for writing the film.’

Still, Gosling defended his collaborators in a statement after the nominations were released.

‘There is no Ken without Barbie, and there is no Barbie movie without Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie, the two people most responsible for this history-making, globally-celebrated film,’ it read.

While speaking with Variety, Gosling clarified that he ‘heavily edited the statement.’

‘I think if I say any more about it, I’m going to basically put on a mink and start challenging people to a beach-off on Malibu Beach,’ he joked.

He seemed pleased with how the film has continued to get audiences talking.

‘In terms of people’s reactions, the film continues to provoke conversation in every incarnation,’ he said. ‘It keeps provoking this dialogue. It’s the power of this movie. I struggle to compare it to anything.’

He added that its exploratory nature is what makes Barbie ‘more than a summer blockbuster.’

‘It’s a great work of art. That’s what Greta and Margot created,’ he added.

Barbie also received nominations for Best Supporting Actress for America Ferrera and Best Original Song for Ken’s existential power ballad I’m Just Ken.

The 96th Academy Awards will be held on Sunday, March 10, at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, and they will be telecast on ABC.
