Captained by Tawanda Muyeye, four Kent Cricket Academy scholars gained valuable experience of Second XI cricket, despite the team’s 148-run defeat, against Middlesex Second XI in a Second XI Championship match at Polo Farm, Canterbury.

Set 373 for victory in 104 overs, Kent Seconds, were  out for 224, with the youngsters all contributing, Oliver Curtiss, making 46, with four boundaries, and a six, Vish Parakirama 21, Ben Dawkins 28, and Ekansh Singh 25. Tawanda Muyeye hit five fours and two sixes, in an innings of 46, and rookie professional, Jaydn Denly, made 30. Noah Cornwell 3 for 38, Shamshev Singh 4 for 28.

A number of Kent’s first team squad featured in the side on the first day of the match, but then went off to Manchester, for their Vitality County Championship match against Lancashire at Old Trafford, to be replaced by the Academy players.

In their first innings, Middlesex Seconds scored 369, Sam Robson, an excellent century, 109 with 12 boundaries, James Cracknell 83, with a six and nine fours, James Isbell 59. Nathan Gilchrist 2 for 62, Hamid Qadri 3 for 41, JK Denly 3 for 62.

In their first innings Kent had been all out for 218, a deficit of 151, Qadri 45, Singh 42, Muyeye 41, Luke Hollman 3 for 48. The visitors then declared their second innings on 221 for 6, Martin Andersson 57, Holman 49, Rob White 71. Tejpal Birdi, who plays for Blackheath, in the Kent League 4 for 54 to set Kent Seconds that improbable winning target.

Kent Second XI are in action again on Tuesday May 7, when they play Surrey Seconds, in a four day Second XI Championship match, away, at Guildford Cricket Club.
