Mia Farrow, Patti LuPone to Return to Broadway in ‘The Roommate’

Must read

Mia Farrow and Patti LuPone will come to Broadway in the new comedy, The Roommate, by Jen Silverman.

The play, directed by Jack O’Brien, will begin performances on Aug. 29, with an official opening night on Sept. 12, at the Booth Theatre. This marks LuPone’s first return to the stage after giving up her Actors’ Equity membership after the run of Company ended in 2022. Farrow was last on Broadway in 2014, in the A.R. Gurney play Love Letters.

“It’s always a big decision to return to the stage, and I certainly had no intention of being back on Broadway so fast. But when I read the play and heard Mia was attached, it became the easiest decision of my life. I’ve always been a fan of Mia’s work and she is a treasured friend. We’re going to have a blast,” LuPone said.

The Roommate is funny, quirky and brilliantly written, and when I learned that Patti LuPone was interested in doing it, how could I resist? She is, of course, a Broadway icon without parallel and we have been friends for decades. It is exciting to be returning to Broadway,” Farrow said.

In the play, a one-act, Sharon, who has never had a roommate, must now navigate living with Robyn, as the play explores the “blossoming intimacy between two women from vastly different backgrounds, as they navigate the complexities of identity, morality and the promise of reinvention.”

LuPone, a stage veteran known for her starring roles in Evita, Gypsy and more, announced her resignation from Actors’ Equity in October 2022, after tweeting “Gave up my Equity card; no longer part of that circus. Figure it out,” she said.

Spokespeople for the production said that LuPone will not be rejoining Equity “for personal reasons,” but did not give details about how she’ll be able to appear on Broadway. A spokesperson for Actors’ Equity did not provide any more details.

“It is Actors’ Equity Association’s policy to not comment on the membership status of individual workers,” a spokesperson said.

Known for her film work, including in Rosemary’s Baby and The Purple Rose of Cairo , Farrow has also appeared on Broadway in the 1979 play Romantic Comedy, with Anthony Perkins.

Chris Harper, who produced Company, which starred LuPone, is producing the play, with Wagner Johnson Productions serving as executive producers. The creative team for The Roommate includes set and costume design by Bob Crowley, lighting design by Natasha Katz and sound design by Mikaal Sulaiman.
